Top 25 Matches of 2011

# 12: WWE Championship Triple Threat Steel Cage Match from Extreme Rules

The Awesome One’s impossible reign as WWE Champion finally came to an end at May's Extreme Rules in a taxing Triple Threat Steel Cage Match. Locked in the enclosure with John Morrison and John Cena, The Miz was still full of himself after beating the Cenation leader in the main event of WrestleMania XXVII, but he wouldn’t be as lucky this time. Taking a whipping from both of his rivals, The Miz almost had an opportunity to escape when R-Truth stormed the cage and attacked JoMo. The Awesome One could not break free, though, and ended up getting hit with an Attitude Adjustment from the top rope and losing his cherished WWE Title.

# 08: John Cena & The Rock vs. The Miz & R-Truth from Survivor Series

The uneasy union between John Cena & The Rock proved to be as formidable as it was combustible at Survivor Series 2011, when the two standard bearers of their respective eras joined forces to battle The Miz & R-Truth in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd. Dubbed “the most charismatic tag team of all time,” Cena and The Great One agreed to put aside their very public distaste for one another to successfully unite against the devious tandem known as The “Awesome Truth.” Despite a mutual celebration that momentarily united members of both Cenation and Team Bring It, a post-match Rock Bottom to Cena reignited these icons’ heated rivalry, setting the stage for their inevitable and highly anticipated confrontation at WrestleMania XXVIII on April 1, 2012.

# 07: The 40-Man Royal Rumble Match

A WWE tradition since 1988, the over-the-top Royal Rumble has long been one of sports-entertainment’s true proving grounds, but it was never as big as it was in 2011. Cramming 40 Superstars into one ring over the course of an hour, this record-setting battle royal played host to the surprising returns of Booker T and Kevin Nash, a strength-in-numbers display from New Nexus and a bizarre partnership between John Cena and Hornswoggle. But, in the end, it was the slimy Alberto Del Rio who survived the grueling bout, dumping Santino Marella to earn a first class ticket to WrestleMania. Some guys have all the luck.

# 05: WWE Champion Rey Mysterio vs. John Cena from Raw

WWE fans watched a title change hands not once, but twice on an electric episode of Raw in July. Shocking the world by winning a tournament to become the WWE Champion, Rey Mysterio had little time to celebrate as he had to defend his newly-won title against John Cena in the main event later that evening. Unsurprisingly, a breathtaking, back-and-forth match unfolded between The Master of the 619 and the Cenation leader, with each gaining the upper hand. After trading finisher attempts, Cena was able to hit the high-flyer with an Attitude Adjustment and get the pin. However, there was another surprise in store after the match, as WWE Champion CM Punk returned with his WWE Title in front of a stunned crowd.

# 04: Raw Elimination Chamber Match

They say there are no atheists in foxholes. Same goes for the Elimination Chamber. Dubbed The Devil’s Playground for good reason, the satanic structure houses six Superstars inside ten tons of twisted metal, jagged steel and bulletproof glass. But, like any great battlefield, the chamber has become a place of glory that serves as a testament to the cunning or power of the Superstar who survives it. For John Cena, it has been such a place on three occasions, including this February 20 war against Sheamus, CM Punk, Randy Orton, John Morrison and R-Truth. Determined to earn a WWE Championship Match at WrestleMania, the Cenation leader persevered before finally eliminating Punk to earn his showdown with The Miz on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

# 02: WWE Champion John Cena vs. CM Punk from Money in the Bank

In the weeks after CM Punk hurled a verbal pipe bomb on Raw in late June, WWE was surrounded by a buzz not felt since the days when “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was stomping mudholes in the competition. That excitement followed The Straight Edge Superstar into his hometown of Chicago where he battled WWE Champion John Cena in what Punk claimed would be his final bout. Vowing to leave with the WWE Title, The Second City Savior shocked the world when he did just that. With Mr. McMahon looking on in shock, the new champion hopped a barricade and blew a kiss goodbye to his old boss before disappearing into the Windy City night. For the first time in a long time, WWE fans had no idea what would happen next.

John Cena def. The Miz by Count-out; R-Truth returned (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Outraged over Kane’s recent attacks, John Cena demanded The Big Red Monster face him in the ring live in Chicago. Instead, he got The Awesome One. Looking to end 2011 on a high note, The Miz challenged the man he beat at WrestleMania XXVII and ended up getting tossed around by a very focused Cena.
Frustrated, Miz rolled out of the squared circle and talked trash until he got counted out. But before he could escape without any more damage, he was stopped by R-Truth. Returning after being put in the hospital by The Awesome One, Truth recklessly battered his former friend around the ringside area and then warned, “This New Year’s, acquaintances be forgot? No! They’re going to get got!”

Kane explained why he attacked John Cena(WATCH | PHOTOS)
After two brutal assaults on John Cena, The Big Red Monster finally revealed why he targeted the Cenation leader. The monster’s reason? Hate.
Standing behind a wall of fire, Kane made it clear that he’s disgusted by Cena’s “Rise Above Hate” T-shirt slogan, because humans are hateful by nature. The twisted demon then said he’s going to help the powerful Superstar understand this by leading WWE fans in a chant of “Cena sucks! Cena sucks!” Some members of the WWE Universe followed Kane, others didn't, but the outcry seemed to shake the confident competitor.

Kane attacked John Cena (WATCH)
Hell has come back. One week after he shocked the WWE Universe by assaulting John Cena, Kane stomped into Philadelphia and did it all over again.
Hitting the ring to admit that he’s willing to fight if that’s what The Big Red Monster wants, Cena was surprised when Mark Henry appeared instead of Kane. The World’s Strongest Man and the former WWE Champion were ready to come to blows when the deafening pyro of The Devil’s Favorite Demon exploded. The masked monster ignored Henry and went right for the Cenation leader, but Cena was ready and clotheslined him over the ropes. Still, the fiery giant fought back, dragging his target from the squared circle before throwing him around the ringside area and tearing off his “Rise Above Hate” shirt in a frightening display of rage.

The story behind John Cena's salute

Every night before he enters the ring, John Cena, clad in camouflage shorts, stands at attention and salutes as though a commanding officer were standing in front of him barking orders. Most think that Cena is simply acknowledging his devoted fans, which the leader of the Cenation will not deny.
“It’s a salute of loyalty to those that stand by me, that have been doing it for years,” Cena explained to WWE.com.
However, for the 10-time WWE Champion, there is also a much deeper meaning behind his gestures.
“Every night when I do that salute, it’s also a sign of respect to the men and women that don the uniform of the Armed Forces,” he declared.
John Cena holds the Armed Forces in the highest esteem and has implemented many aspects of the military way into his attitude. It goes beyond camo shorts and a salute.
“When it came my time to slowly redefine who I was from wrestler to hip hop thug, to the next step in my career, I basically took the ideologies of discipline from the Armed Forces,” Cena said. “I took honor, code and country and came up with hustle, loyalty and respect. I think exactly like they do.”
The leader of the Cenation also has one very personal ritual related to the Armed Forces. Those who pay close attention to Cena right before a match begins will see him remove a pair of dog tags from around his neck and kiss them before handing them to the referee or ringside attendant for safe keeping. But the Superstar prefers to keep the meaning behind the tags to himself.
“That’s secret information that I’ve told a few Make-A-Wish families and those people who need to know. [WWE.com] doesn’t need to know,” Cena lightheartedly explained.
As evidenced by his passionate speech at Fort Bragg during Tribute to the Troops, John Cena is extremely reverent toward the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and will continue to do whatever he can to honor their ultimate sacrifice.

The Rock won the Slammy Award for Game Changer of the Year (WATCH | PHOTOS)Hobbling to the podium on crutches, an ailing Christian ranted about deserving an award for courageousness before presenting the Game Changer of the Year Slammy to The Rock. The Great One was not on hand to accept the trophy, but his WrestleMania opponent did the honors for him. After criticizing The People’s Champion for not showing up, John Cena said The Rock may have changed the game tonight, but this April in Miami the Cenation leader will change the game forever.

John Cena vs. World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry ended in a No Contest; masked Kane returned (WATCH | PHOTOS)
The Cenation leader had a week to prepare for this showdown with The World’s Strongest Man, but there was one Superstar John Cena was not ready to deal with on Raw — Kane. Entering through hellfire and brimstone, The Big Red Monster made a shocking return under a mask and attacked Cena, driving him into the mat with a devastating chokeslam. The demon’s motives were unclear, but one thing was sure — hell has come home.

Can Cena “three-peat” as Superstar of the Year?

John Cena is one of the biggest, brightest and most controversial Superstars in WWE history. Alternately beloved and booed, the multi-time champion’s in-ring accomplishments command respect and place him among the all-time greats. But is he the Superstar of 2011?

Cena received recognition at both the 2009 and 2010 Slammy Awards, winning perhaps the most prestigious award of them all: Superstar of the Year. Now, he goes for an unprecedented “three-peat” when the 2011 Slammy Awards come to Raw SuperShow this Monday at a special start time of 8/7 CT. A Superstar of the Year hat trick seems improbable, but if anyone is accustomed to overcoming stacked odds, it’s The Cenation Commander-in-Chief. (VOTE NOW)

2011 has been a tumultuous year for John Cena, with high highs and low lows. He won the WWE Championship on several occasions and competed in all the big events, at all the big venues, against all of WWE’s biggest talents. But he also played second fiddle to The Rock at Survivor Series (before getting Rock Bottomed), failed to defeat The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII, watched the meteoric rise of his loquacious rival CM Punk and gets jeered now more than ever.

A "three-peat" will also be difficult because other WWE luminaries like Punk, The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and Mark Henry are worthy of Superstar of the Year in their own right. The competition for the honor is always rugged, but especially so this year against two current World Champions and several top contenders.

Whether or not he is crowned Superstar of 2011, Cena will continue to “Rise Above Hate.” After all, he has beaten long odds before. Just last year he was named Superstar of 2010 and, in 2009, he won the tournament to claim Superstar of the Year honors. A third Slammy Award is another item for the trophy case, another impressive line in his biography, another measure of approval. It may not curtail the recently overwhelming boos of the WWE Universe, but if anyone is up to the task of winning hearts, minds and Slammy Awards, it’s the tenacious, indomitable John Cena.

Tune in to the 2011 Slammy Awards this Monday at a special start time of 8/7 CT to see if the Cenation leader achieves an astonishing three-peat, and be sure to VOTE NOW to make your voice heard.

A broski's sacrifice

The WWE Universe will say what they will about John Cena, but on WWE Raw SuperShow, the 10-time WWE Champion proved that if he is one thing, it is selfless.

After defeating Zack Ryder to earn a spot in the WWE Championship Match at WWE TLC, a visibly distraught Long Island Iced-Z couldn’t believe he lost a U.S. Title opportunity. With his friendship in question, Cena marched to Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis’ office and relinquished his spot in WWE TLC’s main event for Ryder to have another chance to earn a U.S. Title bout. The reason is simple, Cena sees a great deal of potential in the young Superstar and wants him to have his fair chance.

“Zack Ryder is one of those Superstars that has the drive to either go down swinging or be noticed,” Cena said. “He’s the first Superstar in a long time, along with CM Punk, that will do anything to show people they have the passion for this business.”

Ryder’s second chance to earn a U.S. Championship Match seemed to be too daunting a task for the Long Island native. World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry was beyond prepared to induct Ryder into the Hall of Pain. However, Cena again proved his loyalty and selflessness by helping Long Island Iced-Z secure the victory.

The self-proclaimed Internet Champion’s rise in popularity can be attributed to his use of social media and the fan-favorite YouTube show “Z! True Long Island Story.” There’s no denying his impact when legions of followers amongst the WWE Universe all exclaim “Woo! Woo! Woo!” in unison with Ryder. Long Island Iced-Z’s also spearheaded a ground-breaking Twitter petition topped off at nearly 25,000 names, one of them being Cena himself.

Cena understood what was being asked of him when Mr. Laurinaitis presented the possibility of Ryder receiving another chance to face U.S. Champion Dolph Ziggler. An accomplished ring warrior, the Cenation leader knows the support of other WWE Superstars is crucial in being successful.

“No one has thrown Ryder a lifeline,” Cena explained. “I am participating in one of the biggest matches in history on April 1, with or without the WWE Title. I’m confident I’ll get another chance, but Zack may not.”

When he debuted in WWE in 2002, a rookie Cena answered an open challenge from Kurt Angle. While Angle came out victorious, Superstars took notice of the young and ambitious West Newbury, Mass., upstart and went out of their way to show their approval of what at the time the future Cenation leader referred to as “ruthless aggression.”

“I was fortunate enough to have individuals stick up for me early in my career,” Cena explained. “I wouldn’t be where I am if it was not for those opportunities.”

Of course, Ryder’s U.S. Title Match at WWE TLC came after Cena helped Long Island Iced-Z defeat the World Heavyweight Champion. But the 10-time WWE Champion does not live in fear of being inducted into Henry’s Hall of Pain when they battle at the special three-hour WWE Raw SuperShow.

“Mark’s a big boy, but I wouldn’t get into any business that I didn’t think I could handle,” Cena said.

Love him or hate him, thanks to the Cenation leader’s sacrifice, the WWE Universe will see Zack Ryder finally challenge Dolph Ziggler for the United States Title at WWE TLC. Will Cena’s effort be for naught, or will the Internet Champion become the U.S. Champion? Find out at WWE TLC, Sunday Dec. 18 at 8/7 p.m. CT only on pay-per-view.

John Cena, U.S. Champion Dolph Ziggler, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz argued over who deserves to face WWE Champion CM Punk (PHOTOS)
Everyone wants to hold the WWE Title, but which Superstar deserves to face WWE Champion CM Punk? That’s what Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis had to decide when he broke up the bickering of John Cena, United States Champion Dolph Ziggler, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz.
Proving that he’s not as dull as The Straight Edge Superstar says he is, the executive came up with this decision — Miz, Ziggler and Del Rio would compete against SmackDown Superstars tonight and if they win, they will be entered in the WWE Championship Match at WWE TLC in two weeks. Cena, on the other hand, would undergo a “social experiment” that the GM had dreamt up.

John Cena def. Zack Ryder (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Although they’re good friends outside of the ring, John Cena and Zack Ryder were forced to battle tonight as a part of a “social experiment” concocted by John Laurinaitis. (WATCH) If Ryder won this bout, he would earn a future United States Title opportunity. If Cena was victorious, he would compete for the WWE Title at WWE TLC. With stakes high, both Superstars battled with everything they had, but it was the Cenation leader who grabbed the victory. Still, even with the win, the powerful competitor didn’t look happy as he exited.

Then, watch Raw on Monday to see the winner, the debut of Brodus Clay and an explosive showdown between World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry and John Cena.

Zack Ryder def. World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry in a Title-free Match (WATCH)
After John Cena agreed to forfeit his WWE Championship opportunity at WWE TLC if Zack Ryder was given a second chance, John Laurinaitis scheduled this bout with obvious intentions to see Long Island Iced-Z crushed. But what seemed like an insurmountable obstacle for The “Woo Woo Woo Kid” soon turned to triumph as the Cenation leader blasted Mark Henry with an Attitude Adjustment in this no count-out, no disqualification match to help Ryder score the win. The spray-tanned Superstar now has a future United States Title Match against Dolph Ziggler.

WWE Champion CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz signed a contract for their WWE TLC bout
Now that the combatants for WWE TLC’s WWE Title Match were set, the Interim Raw General Manager upped the ante by making the bout a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match. Although it is one of WWE’s most career-threatening bouts, all three Superstars eagerly signed the contract before attacking each other in an all-out brawl. As officials hit the ring to try to break up the melee, the WWE Universe cheered wildly, knowing they will see one hell of a match in two weeks.
