Why would The Rock team with John Cena?

On Monday’s WWE Raw SuperShow, John Cena announced that he wanted The Rock to be his partner against The Miz & R-Truth at Survivor Series — a choice that has many WWE fans scratching their heads. After all, isn’t The Great One the man who cost Cena his WWE Title Match against The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII? Didn’t he once call the Cenation leader a “big fat bowl of Fruity Pebbles?” Isn’t he the Superstar who will be standing across the ring from Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII in the most anticipated bout in WWE history?

Why in the world would Cena want this man in his corner?

More importantly, why would The Rock want to help out a guy who he once compared to Barney the Friendly Dinosaur?

It may be an unlikely pairing, but The Brahma Bull is no stranger to unlikely pairings. At the 2001 Survivor Series, The Great One joined forces with rivals like Chris Jericho and The Big Show in order to combat the invading forces of the WCW/ECW Alliance. Perhaps The Rock will notice the similarities between that vicious faction and the destructive team of The Miz & R-Truth. Both squads were out to take down WWE and that’s something The People's Champion simply won’t allow.

Or maybe The Great One will recognize the opportunity to shake off some ring rust. Sure, The Rock may be The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment, but he hasn’t had a legitimate match in more than seven years. A Superstar who has been in the ring every night would barely be able to hang with the Cenation leader. What chance does a guy who hasn’t locked up since George Bush was in office have?

And if The Brahma Bull wants to scout his WrestleMania XXVIII opponent, there’s no better way to do it than to stand in the ring with the man. Sure, the iconic Superstars trade verbal jabs in the squared circle and have even came to blows on more than one occasion, but there’s nothing that compares with going bell to bell with another competitor. Does The Rock want to know Cena's strengths? His weaknesses? If he fights next to him in the most famous arena in the world, he'll learn everything he needs to know about The Cenation Commander-in-Chief.

So will The Great One agree to team with his rival? Or is he too comfortable in his custom trailer on the set of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation?” WWE.com can’t say for sure, but we’ve never seen The Rock back down from a challenge before.

John Cena rises above hate

John Cena

From humble beginnings growing up in West Newbury, Mass., to his nearly 10 years as a WWE Superstar, John Cena has absorbed more punishment than he’d probably care to recall. Whether he’s squaring off with The Miz & R-Truth in a Handicap Match on Raw SuperShow or competing in front of a hostile crowd, the stalwart Superstar doesn’t just shrug off animosity, he rises above it.

At Vengeance, on the same night his mission to capture Alberto Del Rio’s WWE Championship ended at the hands of the diabolical tandem known as The “Awesome Truth,” Cena’s new attire and the self-empowering message emblazoned in red, white and blue on the front – “Rise Above Hate” – provided the members of Cenation with some much-needed inspiration as their hero faced seemingly insurmountable odds.

“I wanted to make a positive statement,” Cena told WWE.com in describing his latest shirt, which features the logo of the anti-bullying “be a STAR”campaign printed on the sleeve. “I have a varied group of loyal fans out there that will literally back me through thick and thin. I’m known for crazy graphics and colors on my shirts, and I’ve pretty much run through the entire rainbow. I didn’t want the message to be drowned out with a graphic or anything like that, so we went real simple [with a black shirt] and put the words ‘Rise Above Hate’ with ‘Hustle, Loyalty, Respect’ on the back.” (PHOTOS)

Cena continued, “It really dawned on me when the phrase ‘Never Give Up’ became popular. I’ve never really said it on TV – maybe once – but everyone kind of associated it with me because it was on my T-shirts. I get so many messages on Twitter and questions like, ‘Hey, I’m being bullied at school. What do I do?’ Those are very personal situations, and each requires a unique approach to handle, but ‘Rise Above Hate’ is a way to tell someone to be the bigger person. Because if anyone gets bullied around here [in WWE], it’s me.” (FOLLOW CENA ON TWITTER)

At Vengeance, Cena also debuted new ring gear, replacing his iconic “jorts” with shorts featuring a variety of camouflage designs.

“The jean shorts, for the moment, have been retired,” Cena said assertively. “These are military-issued camo, and I think they will stand out. I have every U.S. Military service branch represented: Army, Marine Corps., Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. I’ll be changing it up from time to time.”

However, Cena was quick to clarify that he hasn’t ditched the denim completely.

“They’re always in the closet,” Cena said. “Maybe when they come back in style 30 years from now I’ll bust them out for the WWE Hall of Fame or something.”

WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio def. John Cena (Last Man Standing Match)

SAN ANTONIO — John Cena’s unmatched willpower and sheer guts have seen to it that he always gets back on his feet — but not tonight. Brutally assaulted by The Miz and R-Truth during his vicious Last Man Standing Match with WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio, the Superstar had his potential 11th World Championship reign stolen from him by the devious duo as they smashed the Cenation leader, allowing The Mexican Aristocrat to take advantage of his wounded challenger and retain his title. (PHOTOS)

It was a shocking ending to a bout that was controversial before the bell even rang. Forced to rumble in a dilapidated ring that World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry and Big Show destroyed in the prior contest, (PHOTOS) Cena and Del Rio didn’t waste any time trading chinlocks and armdrags in the squared circle. Instead, the rivals went at it like barroom brawlers, brutalizing each other with the ring posts, steel steps and everything else that wasn’t nailed down in San Antonio’s AT&T Center.

For Del Rio, the bout quickly became a proving ground. Competing in his first Last Man Standing Match, the WWE Champion demonstrated his resolve by fighting back after being driven through a table by his opponent. With his determined performance, Del Rio showed the WWE Universe that his expensive cars and perfect hair belie the tough competitor hiding under the cashmere scarf.

For Cena, it was an opportunity to do what he does best. Choosing the stipulation that fits his “never say die” attitude, Cena knew he could not be stopped in a Last Man Standing Match. After all, the West Newbury, Mass. native defeated rivals like Umaga and Batista in this very bout. ( LAST MAN STANDING HISTORY)

Alberto Del Rio should have been the latest Superstar to fall to Cena in a Last Man Standing Match. Despite constant interference from his personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez, The Mexican Aristocrat was on dream street after receiving a massive Attitude Adjustment through the Spanish announce table. The official nearly counted to 10 before The “Awesome Truth” stole his attention.

Destroying Cena in the ring, The Miz & R-Truth gave Del Rio a chance to get back to his feet and take advantage of his battered challenger. Although he was able to stand up, Cena was ultimately knocked out cold when the smug champion blasted him in the head with the WWE Title. There was no getting up from a shot like that.

This is the second time The “Awesome Truth” has assaulted Cena following their attack on the former WWE Champion at WWE Hell in a Cell. Both The Miz and R-Truth may soon regret picking this fight.
